Abstract
A case of hypercalcemia complicating acute myelogenous leukemia, the first report in
Korea, is described with review of literature.
The patient was admitted with a 5-day history of low back pain and general
weakness, who had been diagnosed as AML 5 months prior to admission and treated
with daunorubicin, cytarabine as remission induction chemotherapy and hematological
remission had been achieved.
He had additionally been given 1 course of consolidation chemotherapy during
remission, and on regular follow up thereafter.
On admission, laboratory studies revealed a serum calcium 12.5§·/dl(normal, 9.5 to 10.5
§·/dl), serum phosphorus 3.8§·/dl(normal, 2.5 to 4.5§·/dl), and serum radio-immune
reactive parathyroid hormone 0.54ng/d1 ( normal, below 0.50ng/dl).
Despite therapy with ¥³ saline, diuretis, corticosteroid and calcitonin, serum calcium
rose to 14.7§·/dl on the 3rd hospital day. The patient's condition deteriorated and he
died shortly thereafter. Permission for postmortem examination was refused.
